My wife and I spent our Saturday morning the other day on a photowalk at Temple Square. The grounds were filled with tulips and flowering trees like the one above. You can see my set on flickr here.

Today’s photo was taken in Smithfield Utah. I was driving around with my brother and sister-in-law scouting for locations to shoot. My brother spotted this sign and gave me the challenge to shoot it without getting all the buildings and abandoned cars to the side. The challenge was on, I was able to get the result by using my 70 - 200mm lens. I used a lightroom preset to add the vintage look.

Burnt Skyscraper

I’m a big fan of using presets in Adobe Lightroom. Today’s shot is an example of one of Matt Kloskowski’s Lightroom presets called Burnt Tone found on his blog Lightroom Killer Tips.

While on business in Seattle one morning, the light was reflecting off this building into my room. When I looked out and saw the morning fog and the steam from the building in the background I immediately knew that the Burnt Tone preset would make it look as if the building was on fire. After a quick crop and basic post processing in ACR the preset was applied. Be sure to check out Matt’s blog for new presets weekly.

I just started a new job and am making some major adjustments so my postings will be light until I get into a routine. The good news, with this change I will have more time to devote to my family and photography.

The weather was cooperating and I was finally able to get out and try my 70-200mm lens for some portraits. My daughter (Britney) was more than happy to pose to show off her new hair style. We only had a few minutes, the sun was setting and I was loosing light fast. I noticed that when the shutter speed would fall below 1/200th second it was difficult to keep everything tack sharp. Even though I’m not 100% pleased with the quality of this portrait due to using a slow shutter I’m still happy with how it turned out.

Salt Lake City Water Tower

Today’s shot was taken on our latest photowalk in Salt Lake City. I’ve noticed lately that for some strange reason I’m drawn to water towers. Space Needle

I was in Seattle this week on business and wasn’t able to get out much, but I was able to make to the Space Needle. Nothing really technical about this shot. Used a tripod and set my dial to Aperture Priority, stopped down until I had an acceptable shutter speed. Set the timer(forgot my cable release) to 2 seconds as to avoid camera shake. This business trip will be my last hopefully for a long time, I’m not a big fan of flying anymore. There was a time when flying was tolerable but now days it’s not even that. I will be starting a new job in less than two weeks and am excited to spend more time with my family and getting out to shoot more.

Post-Photowalking Utah - TRAX

Had a blast once again at our March Photowalking Utah event. It was a cold windy day but it didn’t stop about twenty-five of us. We had quite a few newbies join this time.

We all boarded the TRAX light-rail and rode around the city stopping at a few locations for a mini (15 minutes) photo shoot before we boarded the next train.

I felt a little out of my comfort zone, I just purchased a Canon 40D and am not familiar with all the functions. I’m going on a business trip tomorrow to Seattle and am planning on getting out to shoot at night to get familiar with my new toy. So far I’m really impressed in the design and speed, this is definitely a step up from my Canon XTi.

F-16 Fighting Falcon

Today’s picture of an F-16 Fighter jet was taken at Hill Air Force Museum located about five miles south of Ogden Utah. The Museum is open to the public and is free. There are two large buildings packed with war planes, jets and other exhibits. I only had a couple of hours that day but could have easily spent many more.

A volunteer WWII vet was there answering questions and enjoying talking to people close to this F-16. As I walked by he noticed my camera gear and asked how long I’ve been into photography. After exchanging a few pleasantries he proceeded to tell me that he worked on a large sophisticated cameras that were installed in fighter jets. His job was to remove the large canisters from the jets and develop the film. We talked for about 30 minutes and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of our conversation. He was very excited and proud of what he has accomplished in life and for his country and was eager to share it with strangers/visitors.

If you’re near Ogden and have a few hours, make sure you stop at the Museum. If you want some great photos be sure to bring a tripod or a fast lens. The lighting inside the buildings is a bit dim.
