Break the Rules
At Photocamp Utah this year Zach Arias was our keynote speaker and gave lots of great advise. One thing he stressed was to gain trust with your clients and don’t be afraid to break the rules.
The photo above is something that I’m happy to say that I was glad to break the rules. I was contacted by Madi to take photos of her in her ballet studio recently. She is graduating from high school and will be finished dancing at this studio and wanted to get some images. I had photographed her before for her senior photos and with her family, since I had gained her trust I wanted to try something that I normally don’t do. As I was setting up my lights I asked Madi to stand between my lights to warm up so i could get my camera set to the correct exposure. What she didn’t know was that my exposure was all set and I was ready to shoot. I wanted to try something different so I photographed her wide with my lights in the shot. In the past I would not have done this because who would want to have lights in their photos. Turned out this was one her mother’s favorite.
Don’t be afraid to try something bold and different. It’s OK to break the rules and use your creativity, who knows, your clients may like it.
50/50 Project Episode 2
My second episode from my 50/50 project is a bit late. My laptop video card went out, luckily Apple fixed it for free. So with my laptop down for a few days and a busy work week I finally am able to upload something. Stay tuned for Episode 3. Here’s the link to episode one.
Mini-Minilypse ~ Salt Lake City Library
This past weekend I attended a one-day photo event hosted by Renee Lee at the Salt Lake City Library. There were sixteen photographers and a bunch of models. It was fun to rub shoulders with other photogs and watch them all create stock images. These images will be a great addition to my iStock portfolio

50/50 Project Episode 1
I’ve set some goals for myself this year. One of those goals is to do a project that will challenge me to be a better photographer and to understand my equipment better. I purchased a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens a while ago and haven’t used it much so I decided that I would take at least one photo a day with my 50mm lens for 50 days. I don’t want to constrain myself to just one photo a day, I will most likely be taking multiple photos a day and sharing those in a video. I don’t have a set schedule for the videos but will most likely be weekly.
The photos in this video were taken from April 1st – April 7th.
1st Project – Shoot more with a 50mm lens

I announced on a previous post that I’ve started a couple of projects this month. My first project is to shoot with my Canon 50mm lens. My Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS is my favorite lens and I feel very comfortable shooting with it. I carry my 50mm lens with me but don’t shoot with it much so I’ve decided to leave my favorite lens in my bag and just shoot with this lens. I will be posting about my second project next week. It’s been a fun project to work on and l look forward with sharing it here.

A Time for Change

I use my MacBook Pro all the time, it’s what I use at work and at home along with my iMac. I’m implementing some goals this month that will hopefully keep me away from this thing more and out doing what I love; making pictures. I’ve been caught up in a trend lately that I don’t like and it’s time to make a change. I have a couple of projects that I’m starting today that I will hopefully be able to announce soon that will force me to get out and have fun.
When I start to get comfortable with certain things I find that my ability to learn and grow comes to a halt. Changing things up to get me out of that comfort zone is what I need to make me grow and learn.
