Look Behind You

Empty Dock, originally uploaded by Scott O. Smith.

After shooting a series of sunrise pictures one morning before work, I was putting my gear in the car and looked across the road where I was shooting and saw this empty boat dock. The calm water with the mix of colors really caught my eye.

Room at the Top

Taken at Antelope Island looking East towards Francis Peak(Wasatch Range). This photo doesn’t do much justice to show the height of these peaks. The elevation of this photo is at 4200 feet, the elevation of Francis Peak is 9700 feet. I never get tired of the view.

I use Adobe Lightroom for processing all my RAW files. It’s more than just a photo organizer, It’s become an important part of many photographers workflow. Scott Kelby uses it for all of his RAW processing and about 70% of his workflow.

I recently found some neat presets at Inside Lightroom. For this photo, I used the Cross Process Dragan 4 preset.

Vanishing Point

Vanishing Point, originally uploaded by Scott O. Smith.

van-ish-ing point
noun
the point at which receding parallel lines viewed in perspective appear to converge.

Vertical lines give a strong sense of depth and strength. They can provide structure and a clear definition by pointing the eye directly to the intended point. The image of the stream (bottom right) leads the eye straight to the point where the water disappears to the left.

While the most common/prefered curved line is the “S” curve, parallel lines can be very effective. The image in the hallway(bottom left) leads the eye straight to the door and leaves the viewer wondering what’s on the other side.

Snowcapped Mountains

Snowcapped Mountains, originally uploaded by Scott O. Smith.

Northern Utah received it’s first major snow this past weekend. Several ski resorts have announced when they will be opening. Alta is the first to open November 15th.
Utah is known for great powder. One reason people keep coming back is the short distance to the resorts. A quick 30 – 45 minute drive will get you to just about any resort.
I plan on learning how to snowboard with my daughter this year. I’m not sure if my knees and backside can take the abuse.

All time favorite according to flickr. I find it interesting that the ship appears to be the same size and shape as Alcatraz Island.

Salt Lake City Photowalk Update

Mountain Time, originally uploaded by Scott O. Smith.

Had a great time at the Salt Lake City Photowalk. It was a wet rainy day but six of us braved the 40 degree weather and had fun. I met some great photographers and look forward to another photowalk.

It’s amazing what attention a group of people with DSLR’s can attract. We were standing on a sidewalk chatting in front of a motel with our camera gear(tripods, strobes, backpack’s), a woman in a car stopped and asked what “famous person” we were waiting to photograph.

Check out the others that were there: Rich, Harley, Diane , Ann and Bryan.

Photowalking Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City Skyline, originally uploaded by Scott O. Smith.

I’m planning on attending Photowalking Salt Lake City today. It’s been raining and snowing for the last twelve hours, the forecast is calling for a high of 39F/3.8C. Should make for an interesting photowalk.

I’ve been on a Photowalk with Thomas Hawk and others in San Francisco. It’s a relaxed fun way to meet people that have a common interest. I stay in contact with people I met there and enjoy following their work. You can check out my photo set here.
